Abstract/Summary:
The introduction of wireless communication technology to the education field has provided students with a brand-new learning method, that is, mobile learning. The learning model will become a new learning trend in the future. The emergence of new-type smart phones creates new technical conditions for the development of mobile learning. To make full use of the characteristics of smart phones to assist students’ learning is of vital significance to improve their learning quality. In vocational college English teaching, students are lacking in interests and ability of autonomous learning with poor command of language, thus greatly affects their language skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing. Previous research about autonomous learning has been focused on how to arouse their interests during class teaching. This paper stresses on studying the influence of mobile learning on autonomous learning against the current background at an attempt to improve students’ English self-study ability. By surveying students’ use of smart phones and designing the mobile learning strategy to sharpen students’ English self-study awareness, the author hopes to work out a feasible plan suitable for the students in the higher vocational college where the author works to improve their self-study ability through mobile learning, provide references for the English network teaching reform of the author’s higher vocational college and for the improvement of students’ English self-study ability, English test scores and comprehensive English ability. That is the purpose of the study. The author took 79 junior college students of non-English major in Hetao College as the research objects and used the quantitative and qualitative research methods. The research aims to answer the following questions: 1)What’s the current situation of mobile learning of junior collegeof non-English majors in Hetao College? 2) Whether smart-phone based mobile learning can improve students’ interests and motivation? and 3)What’s the effect of mobile learning on university students’ performances in examination? At the beginning of the new term, the author gathered relevant data through questionnaire to survey all research objects’ mobile learning situation. Then, the author provided smart-phone based English vocabulary self-study training for the experimental group and asked the group of students to have twelve-week English vocabulary self-study through smart mobile devices. After that, the author interviewed 15 of them to learn the influence of mobile learning on their English self-study ability. The English vocabulary test scores of all research objects were collected as the students’ academic performance. Finally, SPSS was adopted to conduct descriptive analysis, independent-samples T-test, correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis of all the quantitative data.By exploring the relevance among mobile learning, English self-study ability and English vocabulary test scores, the author achieved the following major findings: 1) Students in Hetao College has a smattering of mobile learning and most students have no the awareness of self-study, but they are extremely interested in mobile English learning; 2) The smart-phone based mobile learning can improve students’ motivation and stimulate their learning interest, but the self-study model still need teachers’ help and guidance; 3) The strategies put forward in this paper are helpful to improve the effect of students’ English performances. The research findings suggest that, in the future teaching activities, it is necessary to provide self-study training based on mobile learning for non-English majors in the author’s college, especially the training of their self-study ability, and help students establish correct and positive learning concept so as to effectively improve their learning methods and their English self-study ability and academic performance.
