With the growing importance of the role of culture playing in teaching Chinese as a Second language, a consensus has been widely reached by the professionals that the teaching of Chinese language and culture should parallel. Moreover, a survey shows that the Chinese learning motivation of most of the foreign learners comes from their interest in Chinese culture. The above two factors manifest the necessity of offering content-rich culture courses which meet learners’learning needs. In accordance with the notion of "Promoting Chinese culture", this thesis discusses the possibility and practice of integrating Classical Chinese poetry into the Chinese culture teaching, which has rarely been attempted before in this field. By means of analyzing Classical Chinese poetry texts, collecting teaching resources and referring to existing teaching models, this paper also offers the design of a culture course which combines the introduction of tourist attractions with Classical Chinese poetry. The course is aimed at matching Classical Chinese poetry with Chinese famous tourist attractions by using multimedia techniques to present to the learners a virtual scenario of the beautiful scenery so that the students will enjoy learning Chinese culture as well as having a better understanding of Classical Chinese poetry by following the standard recitation of poems. Thus students’passion for the high language art form of poetry as well as for Chinese landscapes will be ignited. On the basis of the current research results on the teaching of Classical Chinese poetry and tourist culture, also combining the theory of course design, this paper has worked out a teaching plan for the selective culture course, titled Reciting Poetry while Traveling in China, which is to be offered to the international Chinese learners coming to China. The first chapter is the introduction, including the background information of topic selection, the research value of this subject, thinking and research methods. The second chapter reviews the existing research achievements related to course design and the application of multimedia techniques in the teaching of tourist culture as well as in that of poetry. The third chapter illustrates details about this course design including the course nature, teaching objects and standard of contents selection, etc., on the basis of which, the questionnaire on the learners’ demands is designed and the survey is also conducted among the international students in Fudan University followed by statistics and analysis of the result. The fourth chapter is the main body of this paper which discusses the course goals, syllabus and teaching contents and methods. The fifth chapter briefly introduces two common multimedia softwares and takes the lesson of West Lake as an example to demonstrate a sample teaching design and also reflects on the practical teaching process in the end. In the last chapter, this paper summarizes the research results and points out the deficiency of the research in order to provide references for follow-up researchers.
