A Report On The Translation Of Short Stories The Grave Of The Famous Poet And A Travel Piece By Margaret Atwood

This translation report is based on the translation of The Grave of the Famous Poet and A Travel Piece selected from Dancing Girls, a collection of short stories written by Margaret Atwood. In the two stories, the writer offers the readers something about the protagonists’journeys. Meanwhile, the characters in these two novels are females. As a result, Margaret Atwood uses different approaches but has equally satisfactory results in psychological description. With brilliant flashes of fantasy, humor and unexpected ending, the stories written by Atwood reveal the complexities of human relationship. There is no Chinese version both in China and abroad. The translation project is the first English-Chinese translation of them.This translation report chooses Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical guidance. Communicative translation emphasizes to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original. In the process of translation, communicative translation theory provides effective ways for readers and translators to communicative comfortably.The first part of the report includes the introduction of the background, aims and significance of the task. The second part introduces the original text and the writer. Then the difficulties and problems and the consequent solutions have been analysized with numerous examples in case. Through analyzing the various problems in translating the two short stories, the translator has managed to transmit the meaning of source text exactly and use various translation strategies and skills for different problems. The translation version involves literal translation and free translation, addition and omission, semantic extension, reconstruction. In the end, based on her work, the translator hopefully expects to provide some useful advice to those who are interested in Margaret Atwood and her writing.
