| As one of the most important types of tourist texts, travel essays carry rich tourism and cultural information as well as extensive personal emotions. Hence the translation of travel essays represents a significant path to promote cultural exchange, tourism development and broaden spiritual dimensions. However, the translation of travel essays has received few systematic inquiries, and therefore, to study the translation of travel essays from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory forms the subject matter of the thesis.The report is based on my translation practice in the Travel Channel of Global Times.The source text has such linguistic features that it is subjective and contains large amounts of descriptive content about the destinations. Abundant rhetoric devices are employed to add vividness to the text. From the perspective of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory, the thesis discovers that travel essays contain expressive text and informative text and hence both semantic translation and communicative translation should be employed to approach the translation of travel essays.The thesis consists of six parts. Chapter one includes an introduction to the research, followed by Chapter two which is devoted to reviewing studies on translating travel essays and tourism texts. Chapter three is an overview of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory. Chapter four analyzes the difficulties in translating travel essays, falling into three levels, namely grammatical, rhetoric and cultural level. Chapter five explains in details the applicable strategies and techniques for translating travel essays. Specific translation techniques include transliteration, literal translation, paraphrase, amplification, shift of perspective, syntactic readjustment and division. The last chapter concludes the major findings and limitations of the research. The paper explores the translation principles and techniques for travel essays in the hope of providing guidance for other translators. |
