Chinese traditional culture has a long history. T’ai Chi Ch’uan as one of its cultural heritages contains many culture essences like Chinese ancient philosophy, Chinese traditional medicine, strategics, Chinese martial arts, the aesthetics and the regimen. Throughout the history of T’ai Chi Ch’uan we can find that T’ai Chi’s origin is Chen Style T’ai Chi. Then T’ai Chi Ch’uan develops into four main schools, Yang Style(杨), Wu Style (武), Sun Style (孙), Wu Style (吴). Nowadays, more and more people from all over the world are taking part in it. The culture value of T’ai Chi is invaluable for the whole human being and the development and transmission of T’ai Chi is advancing irresistibly. With the development of T’ai Chi Ch’ uan, its translation is not so satisfactory. The immaturity of Chinese to English translation limits its development. However, there is no uniform standard for the translation of the T’ai Chi terms in the world. T’ai Chi culture and the philosophical connotation can’t be presented perfectly to the readers. In addition, the studies on the T’ai Chi translation mainly contain the translation examples or the choice of translation skills which lack of effective theoretical guidance.Based on the studies of the previous, this report makes an attempt to choose Skopos Theory-the core theory of functionalist translation theory as the theoretical guidance. Through the C-E translation practice for Chen Style T’ai Chi Ch’uan, Sword and Broadsword, the author tries to find the translation skills and methods for the translation problems. This report mainly analyses from three aspects:the first part is based on the skopos rule. The analysis mainly studies the translation method for the T’ai Chi terms and the name of T’ai Chi gestures and motions. The secend part is based on the coherence rule, it chooses the translation method to make the translation to comply with the English expressions. The third part is based on the fidelity rule. It mainly studies from the perspectives of pragmatics and rhetoric, and presents several examples to analyze the translation method. The main research methods contain the method of theoretical analysis and the comparative method. The content of the translation practice is selected from Chen Style T’ai Chi Ch’uan, Sword and Broadsword written by Chen Zhenglei. The innovation of this report is the classification and integration for the translation problems in the translation practice, and then using the rules of Skopos Theory to analyze and deal with the translation problems with useful methods and skills. The limitations of this report is that the shortage of the translation versions and the English references. In addition, the acceptability of the translation version needs more studies. This report is an attempt to analyze T’ai Chi texts based on Skopos Theory which aims to provide some references to further studies on T’ai Chi translation.
