A Study Of English Translation On Lyric Talks Of The Human World (Ren Jian Ci Hua)

This thesis is a research on the English translation of Ren Jian Ci Hua (Lyric Talks of the Human World) from hermeneutics perspective. It is not only focused on the translation of words and languages, but also on the understanding and explanation of the deep meaning of the source text with the application of modern Western Philosophy and Aesthetics theories.Based on the Theory of State (Jing jie shuo), core of Wang Guowei’s Lyric Commentary Theory, the first chapter discusses the English translation of Chinese literature commentary terms. Through a Translation and Explanation method, terms closely related with State (Jingjie) and Chinese traditional literature terms, which have some connections with State, are two key points discussed here.The English translation on Wang Guowei’s Commentary Theory is the main issue under discussion in the second chapter. Research starts from the special characteristics of Lyric, and then move to the Theory of State and personal accomplishment of poets.On the basis of research findings of the first two chapters, the third chapter mainly analyses the English translation on Chinese classical poetries and lyrics. As the key to lyric translation, how to express State in translated text is the primary points to be discussed. Meanwhile, a more specific way to translate two types of State, A Scene with Me (you wo zhijing) and A Scene without Me (wu wo zhijing), and the appropriate way to achieve an Unveiled (bu ge) translation are the other two research emphases in this chapter.The conclusion of this research is that in the English translation of Chinese classical commentary works, the whole translation process follows the Understanding-Transformation-Explanation procedure. A profound understanding of the source text is the first and most important step. At the same time, restudy the English translation on Chinese classical poetries and lyrics on the basis of Wang Guo-wei’s Lyric Commentary Theory offers a new translation standard, improves the quality of the translated text, and also benefits its further development.
