With the popularity of internet and the frequent cultural exchanges between China and the western countries, Chinese audience now can access to the foreign advanced culture on TED Talks videos through the internet directly. With its extensive content, TED Talks video is of great importance in the cultural diffusion. However, TED Talks videos can’t reach the Chinese audience in a broad range as it is in English. What’s more, most TED Talks are translated by the caption translation group which has no uniform criteria, so the quality of translation subtitle can’t be guaranteed. Therefore it is hard for the Chinese audience to understand the content of the TED Talks.Subtitle is a kind of practical text type, which requires the translated text to coincide with the source text in meaning, as well as format. Therefore under the guidance of Nida’s dynamic equivalence, the author employs various methods as amplification and omission, division and combination in order to achieve a better translation of the TED Talks.Subtitle translation includes the translation and post-production of subtitle text, which places a high requirement for the translator from the methodological and technical perspectives.Choosing the subtitle texts of five TED Talks videos on computer science as its research materials, this report attempts to explore feasible approaches to the subtitle translation, and hopes that it can provide some constructive enlightenment to the future study in the field.
