A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Theory Of The Lyric

I was commissioned by Zhang Jinhong,a teacher in the College of Liberal Arts of Hebei University,to translate Theory of the Lyric,a new book written by Jonathan Culler,one of the most famous literary theorists in the English world.And this practice report is an analysis and summary of how translation principles and strategies are employed to the Chinese rendering of the introductory and conclusive parts of the book.The report is made up of the following five parts: task description,process description,pre-translation preparation,case analysis and conclusion.In the first chapter,the report briefly introduces the source,content,requirements and performance of the task.The second chapter introduces the process of translation.In the third chapter,the report describes the preparatory work before translation,including collecting background information,analyzing text style,preparing terms,names and theory.The fourth chapter is the core part,where case analysis is made to demonstrate how the Chinese version is faithful and appropriate in content and style by employing the three principles of translation and corresponding translation strategies.In the last chapter a conclusion is made of the experience learnt from this translation practice,especially my new knowledge of translation.Through this practice I realize that translation is not a simple transformation from one language to another,it contains the delivery of non-linguistic factors such as cultural background,emotional tendency and logical thoughts.As the subject of translation,therefore,we must bring the initiative into full play to fulfill the task based on the three principles of translation: meaning transference,acceptability and similarity.
