The source text of this project comes from the book: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation, byMona Baker, an internationally well-known leading figure in translation studies. The book has been one ofthe essential reading materials for postgraduates in translation studies in the world, especially in the US andin Europe. This report is on the translation of the first two parts of Chapter Four.The report is composed of two parts. Part one contains the source and the target texts. Part two reportsthe translation process and the translator’s comments. Through translation practice, the author of this thesisunderstands more about translation theory such as how to translate words in a certain context, and alsolearned more about translation knowledge as well as some linguistic knowledge described in the book. Byusing some examples, this report also provides a detailed analysis of translation methods used in translation.In addition, it presents difficulties that come across in the translation process, such as the processing of longsentences, translating proper names and special terms.This thesis, with the functional equivalence as its supporting theory, mainly analyzes the difficultiesmet and the strategies taken in the process of translation. Thus the author intends to raise translation abilityand to share the translation experience with others who work and study in translation area.
