The Ur III Dynasty (BC2111-2004) was the last and the most powerful dynastyfounded by the Sumerians. Especially during the reign of ulgi (BC2093-2046), thesecond king of this empire, the Mesopotamia economy began to flourish as neverbefore, accordingly, the tributes paid by its central provinces and the foreign vassalswere increasing constantly. Besides, the large amount of royal labors and foreignmessengers or couriers also need cattle subsistence. Under this circumstance, theé-Puzrish-Dagan, which was also identified with the modern mound of Drehem, wasestablished in the38thyear of ulgi. The abundant tablet archives excavated in the animal tribute center enable us toreconstruct the operation of the royal economy and its administrative systems, unfortunately, they were scattered all over the world and being published partially, which causes great difficulties to those who try to research them wholly. To addressthe problem, the Drehem Project was launched by Prof. Wu, Yuhong, the doctoralsupervisor in the Institute of History of Ancient Civilizations, Northeast NormalUniversity. The project focuses on individual officials in the tribute center bycollecting all the relevant texts from the internet resources and arranging them in theirchronological, then reconstructs certain official’s documents and analyzes them briefly. This paper is part of the project. This article aims at reconstructing133texts of Ur-u-ga-lamma, a scribe in thetribute center. The dissertation consists of two parts: the first is a basic analysis andstudy of the archives, it presents the title and main duties of Ur-u-ga-lamma, listsofficials related to him and concludes the purposes of the expenditure of livestocks. The second part arranges all the documents chronologically and translates them inthree languages: Sumerian, English and Chinese. According to above, we come to theconclusion that Ur-u-ga-lamma was working in the tribute center from the reign ofAmar-Sin to Ibbi-Sin, he was mainly responsible for the delivery, taking over andwithdrawal of livestocks and sometimes worked as an inspected scribe. Besides, withthe decline of the whole empire and tribute center, he also took charge of wheat, fodder crops and so on.In conclusion, by the reconstruction and basic analysis of the archives ofUr-u-ga-lamma, we have summarized his title, main duty and co-workers in thelivestock enterprise. It would provide necessary original sources for the study of thebasic information of é-Puzrish-Dagan which includes three aspects: its operational mode, various responsibilities of officials in different positions and its roles played inthe whole empire. At the same time, through the research of withdrawals ofUr-u-ga-lamma, we can get a basic understanding about the religious activities, festival ceremonies and diplomacy of the Ur III Dynasty. |
