Abstract/Summary:
Nowadays, the world’s literary circles have witnessed a constant surge of excellent literary works, which brings forth the increasing popularity of literary translation. Novels, whose translation plays a pivotal role in promoting intercommunication of world culture, are an important part of literary works. As a result, translation of novels remains an important research subject today. The source text, with about10,000words, is an excerpt taken from Chapter One in The Dusantes by Frank Richard Stockton, a famous American writer and humorist in the19th century. His works are mainly humor novels, including Rudder Grange, The Lady or The Tiger, The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine, Mrs. Cliffs Yacht, The Squirrel Inn and The Adventures of Captain. Most of his works are not translated into Chinese, except The Lady or The Tiger. Thus the translation of his works is more likely to achieve innovations. The translation report consists of four chapters. Chapter One is the introduction. Chapter Two includes the brief introduction to the author as well as the brief introduction to the excerpt. Chapter Three makes analysis of typical cases from the perspective of lexical and syntactic translation and rhetorical devices translation. In terms of word translation, there are five methods: lexical equivalence, concretizing of abstract words, addition, omission and class shift. In doing sentence translation, five methods are used. They are the method of translating in the reverse order, the method of division, the method of changing words into sentences, the method of abbreviating as well as the method to change voice. When it comes to rhetorical devices translation, this report makes detailed analysis of three frequently adopted devices:metaphor, alliteration and personification. Chapter Four is a brief summary of the translation task as well as a reflection on a list of weaknesses in this report.
