Growing concern over local water scarcity and challenges in meeting future water demand has led to heightened interest in desalination technology. In the fall of 2002, at the request of the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Research Council’s (NRC’s) Water Science and Technology Board initiated an independent assessment of the Roadmap. Desalination Technology Committee and National Research Council are co-authors of Desalination: A National Perspective. The original text mentioned above has eight chapters. The first four chapters selected for translation which focus on desalination. This translation report has five chapters. The first is the description of the translation project, including its background, its objectives and its significance. This chapter also introduces the source text, including the main content, textual analysis and the translation standard and strategies adopted. The second chapter presents a brief review of Reiss’s text typology theory under which this report unfolds its discussions, and analyzes the application of the theory by listing the cases of the translation practice. The third chapter, guided by Reiss’s text typology theory, illustrates the translation methods for lexical and syntactic translation. Finally, the fourth part summarizes the translation practice, puts forward some relevant problems and expresses perception acquired through the translation. The translation task, based on the text Desalination:A National Perspective and guided by Reiss’s text typology theory, applies flexible lexical and syntactic translation methods. This report is new in the selection of an original text which focuses on desalination and hope it could be a favorable reference for those interested.
