Throughout the history of modern Chinese literature, Su Manshu and his works can not be ignored. I feel a lot during the deep reading of the novel,"six chapters", which impressed me deeply, by Su Manshu. Through close text reading, this paper is started with the characters in it, analyse the author’s fear of females, hidden in the colorful female world and the weak male image, and reveal the reasons for the fear. It may be a result of the author’s unfortunate life experience and the social environment, which exerted a impact on his phychology. The author’s unmentionable disease and economic constraints may also contribute to some extent. This paper contains four parts. The first is the introduction. Among the writers in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic period, Su is a peculiar figure, and was evaluated by Liu Yazi as "can not do without one, can not have two". He is extraordinarily compelling because of his rough life experiences, superior talent and unique identity. The main object of this study is his "Six chapters":the Lone Swan, the Red Tears Down, the Crimson Gauze, Burning the Sword on, Broken Hairpin Written and non-Dreams. Fear is one of the basic human emotions, and everyone of us may fear. But different people may fear different things to different extents. To put it simply, fear is a habit influenced by culture. It is a kind of mood. Typical reactions to fear is to escape, which means to stay away from the object caused fear and danger,as far as possible. Whether animals or humans, in the face of fear, escaping is a normal reaction. The second part is the performances of fearing females in Su’s six chapters. Most works of Su are fictions. Many researchers share the opinion that Su’s fictions are largely autobiographical. The heros in his fiction commonly shows fears of women. And it is becoming more and more apparent through their words, deeds and characteristics, combined with text reading. Meanwhile, the author created a world in his novel, where women are strong while men are weak. Most women in his novels are beautiful in appearance and clever in mind. They are highly cultured, steeped in propriety, enthusiastic, brave and emotional specificity as well. In contrast, the males in his novels are much weaker, physically, economically and emotionally. They are always passive when it comes to relationships. And they escape when they are in deep relationships. The colorful world of female and the sentimental but cowardly males shape a sharp contrast. The third part is a further analysis of the sense of fear in the novel and its causes. The conflict between Buddha and emotion has long been a concern of many people. Many researchers believe that "Love Monks" are reluctant to leave the mundane worldly life, and cannot give up on the Buddha’s longing at the same time. They are wandering between the Buddha and love, bearing double pains. But I think that Buddhism is just a haven, a pure land of his mind, and an excuse to avoid sounding women. He converted to Buddhism largely because of his fear of women, including the fear of his evil stepmother, fear of women’s love and responsibility for family. The author has a wandering life experience, which planted the seeds for his unfortunate life. In addition, he lived in troubled times. All of these made him form a tragic view of love and developed fears of females. Su’s physiological status and economic conditions are also the key reason for his fear of women. Illness is mentioned in his novels for several times. And previous studies have explored this a lot. He indulged into love for many times, but never formed a family. At the age of thirty, Su addicted in brothels in Shanghai, but did not prostitute sex. If it is a result of his cultivation, his obsession with the women in brothels cannot be explained. He even lived with a female once, but just slept together without sex. This strange behavior makes us wonder his health in physiology. As a result, all of his fear and escape are meant to conceal his secret disease. Moreover, Su is just like a lone swan, wandering around during his lifetime. He is a walker, always living in hotels. And he earns a living through being a teacher or accepts aids from his friends. Though he is yearning for the warmth, but he cannot afford the responsibility to support a family. He scolded the woman as troubles sometimes, but also viewed them as soft tripping silk. Su is destined to be lonely in his world. The fourth part is the conclusion, a summary of the full text. The six chapters of Su clearly and sincerely describe a kind of complex and peculiar emotion, longing for but escaping from female.
