Chinese character is an indispensable part in Chinese learning. For non-characterbackground American students, learning Chinese characters is a major problem. In order toresearch on American students’ Chinese character acquisition, author built her researchmainly on thirty students who anticipated in Suzhou University and Ohio State Universitysummer project Performed Suzhou from July to August in2013. Firstly the authorcollected180dictations, altogether input7500characters, among which637errors.Besides author also collected300compositions, altogether input45506characters, amongwhich275errors. Secondly the author analyzed the acquisition errors and reasons in fourlevels, such as stroke, radical, structure, character and comprehensively used methods ofliterature research, questionnaire, and data analysis. To sum up, the reasons of these errorsfalls on the lack of shape concept, lamb learning methods and shortage of teaching time.Finally, on the basis of Chinese characters teaching experience in Overseas Department ofSoochow University, author put forward targeted and practical teaching strategies at fourdifferent levels.
