As one of essential theories in cognitive linguistics, script theory was proposed bySchank and Abelson in1977systematically. The concept of script is a frame ofknowledge and a fixed schema on the basis of daily experiences. And it standardizessome regular behavior and then preserves it in brain. At present, script theory is mainlyused to account for the speech analysis capability and the advanced thinking ability ofthe brain. Compared with the achievements abroad, the domestic research is justlimited in the field of the interpretation and the application of such theory abroad. Forexample, in domestic research, the script theory has been used to explore thecomprehension of the text, to explain questions in the field of translation, to illustrateculture questions on intercultural communication and so on. By the use of the scriptanalysis, the thesis intends to conduct different cognitive structures of literature works(taking the analysis of Walden as an example) in different periods, and then exploresthe reasons why the same literature work can raise literary critics’ different recognitionin different periods. Then, the method concluded in the previous analysis of Waldenwill be employed to explain the phenomenon of popular literature in modern timesand direct technique writing. In general, there are five parts included in this thesis. Chapter one serves as thegeneral introduction of the thesis. Chapter two gives a thorough literature reviewrelated to the present research situation of script theory and its application home andabroad. Chapter three concerns with the specific analysis of Walden, the contrastiveanalysis between Walden and its similar work Nature on the basis of script theory andthe analysis of the reasons why literature critics hold different recognition towards thesame literary work. Chapter four conducts the interpretation of literal critics’ differentrecognition based on the script analysis and the applications of the consult shown in theabove to solve some problems related to cognitive recognition in our daily life. Here, the method of script analysis will be used to explain the phenomenon of popular literature and guide writing from a certain point. Finally, chapter five is the conclusionof the thesis on the basis of the analysis and interpretation in previous chapters. It isthe script structure activated in mind that determines readers’ recognition of literatureworks. That is, the same group of readers’ different recognition of literature worksdepends on the different script activated in their minds. And only the script whichcoincides with the mainstream idea trend in a particular period can get more energy andbe activated compared with other scripts. And only the published work which holdsthe same script with the activated script can be recognized by the same readers.
