A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Say Good Night To Insomnia

This translation practice report is based on my translation task of Say Good Nightto Insomnia, the book marked by its guiding significance and written by Gregg D.Jacobs, the well-known American expert on insomnia. The report conducts a case studyabout the applicability of Communicative Translation in the translation ofEffect-Oriented materials through a comprehensive analysis of the specific strategiesadopted to deal with polysemic words, specialized terms, nouns and adjectives withdynamic meaning, redundant pronouns, complex sentences and independent butclosely-related sentences, etc. The report consists of four parts, including taskdescription, procedure description, case analysis and conclusion. The report firstlyconducts a detailed description of the translation task such as the main features of theoriginal text and the specific requirements of the client. It is followed by the generalintroduction of the translation procedures such as preparations before translation, detailsof the translation process and post-translation jobs. The case analysis of the translationtask is the core part of the report, which probes into the guiding significance ofCommunicative Translation theory when it comes to the text with strong informativeand vocative function. According to the report, Communicative Translation theory ishighly applicable to the translation of effect-oriented text which emphasizes itsinformative and vocative function; however, it should be used together with SemanticTranslation to accurately deliver the information with individual style of the originalauthor. In the conclusion part, the report discusses the problems remained during thetranslation as well as the author’s outlook towards future study.
