| Persuasion aims to tell readers how to persuade others and make them recognize the writer’s view especially at a time when facts no longer seem to matter. This paper chooses the translation of the introduction, the first chapter and part of the second chapter of this book as the basis for discussion.Guided by the Communicative Translation Theory, this paper takes a close look at cases collected during the translation and discusses how the translator can benefit from this theory, enhance target readers’ reading experience and thus realize the vocative function of the source text. The Communicative Translation Theory, put forth by Peter Newmark, emphasizes that similar reading experience should be shared by both source text and target text readers and that the writer’s intended concepts be truthfully delivered. It can therefore effectively guide the translation practice. In order to follow the routines of expression in the Chinese language, realize the function of vocative social science texts, bring the target language’s superiority to a full paly and so produce a better work of translation, this translation project,on three levels of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, employs translation strategies of meaning complementation(including lexical extension, meaning addition, and reference specification),shifting in perspective(including conjunctive shifting,active/passive voice shifting,dynamic/static state shifting and cultural perspective shifting)and structural re-adjustment(including sentence restructuring and word order readjustment). With an effective use of various translation strategies, the author wants to truly realize vocative social science texts’ focus on target readers and make the writer’s purpose a real practice. |
