| Since the1980s, schema theory has gradually developed into a relatively maturetheory and has generated extensive interest in the research fields like philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, and foreign language teaching and so on. Mostlyemployed in the process of discourse comprehension, schema theory has beenrecently combined with translation theories. However, the main focus is put on theapplication of language schema, text structure schema, and knowledge schema, butnot on the research of Liu Mingdong’s language schema, context schema, stylisticschema, and cultural schema, whose application in poetry translation is still few andfar between.Meanwhile, as the masterpiece of Yuan Sanqu, Ma Zhiyuan’s Tian Jing Sha-Qiu Si has been translated into various different languages around the world. Amongthem, there are scores of English versions, some guided by relevance theory andsome by aesthetics of reception, both failing to fully explain the inner mechanism fortranslating poems and thus unable to deliver the underlying information effectively. This thesis hereby attempts to make an investigation on the English translationof Tian Jing Sha-Qiu Si from the perspective of schema theory, mainly discussingthe explanatory power of schema theory in Chinese poetry translation, and theapplication of language schema, context schema, stylistic schema, and culturalschema to the translation of Tian Jing Sha-Qiu Si. Therefore, it can be said to someextent that this thesis provides a new perspective for the translation of Tian Jing Sha-Qiu Si, further expands the research scope of schema theory, and sheds some lighton poetry translation practices. |
