Objectives:To observe the clinical efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave acupuncture on prevention of residual pain after lumbar disc henrniation with radiofrequency ablation, and to explore possible mechanisms of extracorporeal shock wave therapy acupuncture,to provide a basis for prevention of complications by traditional Chinese medicine therapy after minimally invasive operation. Methods:From July 2014 to March 2015, sixty patients with L4/5 lumbar disc herniation in Department of Orthopedics of our hospital were selected which were randomly divided into the control group(30 patients) and the test group (30 patients). Both groups adopted radiofrequency ablation.Five days after radiofrequency ablation, the test group were treated with extracorporeal shock wave therapy acupuncture once every three days and a toal of 3 times. After radiofrequency ablation, all patients were followed up for one year. Before operation and one week,17days,3 months,6months,one year after operation, the VAS evaluation, ODI values and modified MacNab efficacy evaluation between the two groups were compared. Results:All the patients were followed up consecutively at least one year. There were no significant differences between two groups in age, course of disease, gender and so on.There were no significant differences in VAS and ODI before surgery between the control group and the test group. While there were statistically differences in VAS and ODI after surgery between the control group and the test group. In the control group excellent in 9 cases, good in 15 cases, average in 4 cases and poor in 2 case, with an excellent and good rate of 80.00%, effective rate of 93.33%.In the test group:excellent in 17 cases, good in 10 cases, average in 2 cases and poor in 1 case, with an excellent and good rate of 90.00%. effective rate of 96.67%.The differences between these two groups were distinct. Conclusions:Extracorporeal shock wave acupuncture can relieve residual pain of lumbar disc herniation after radiofrequency ablation, improve function of the lumbar spine and prevent residual syptoms from happening.
