Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of adapalene gel plus fusidic acid ointment compared with adapalenen gel (monotherapy) in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris, and to analyze the difference in the efficacy of acne treatment between them. Methods A total of 60 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were selected from the department of dermatology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from June 2014 to January 2015, and randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group adopted adapalene gel and fusidic acid ointment for treatment, while the control group was treated only with adapalene gel. All the patients received therapy for 8 weeks continuously and had been observed to evaluate the efficacy and safety at the eighth week of treatment. Results At the time of 8 weeks, the total effective rate in the experimental group and the control group was 76.7% and 53.3% respectively, and the difference was statistically significant between them (P<0.05). The combination therapy provided a significantly greater efficacy than adapalene gel in decrement of inflammatory lesions, which revealed a significant difference (P<0.05) There was no significant difference in the decrement of non-inflammatory lesions between two groups. No patients reported severe adverse events throughout the study in both groups. Conclusion The simultaneous use of adapalene gel and fusidic acid ointment is more efficacious compared to adapalene monotherapy. Meanwhile, fusidic acid ointment shows clinical superiority in treating inflammatory acne lesions.
