Objective:To evaluate the effect of Levetiracetam on preventing late postttraumatic epilepsy(LTPE) and cognitive changes in patients with brain injury. Methods:Selecting 95 patients with standard from neurosurgery and the emergency department of shanxi medical university, from May 2013 to December 2013.Prospective analysis incidence of epilepsy in 95 cases of traumatic brain injury(TBI)patients within 1 year, evaluate improvement of electroencephalogram(EEG) and cognitive function with a year. Among them, group A receive levetiracetam 500mg/day,b.i.d,, and group B receives sodium valproate 500 mg/day,q.d, for 30 days, starting 7 day postinjury. 33 cases as control group(group C).Group A and group B patients accept drugs after the craniocerebral trauma within 7 days, for patients without conscious, giving drugs through the stomach tube. Compare the incidence of epilepsy, improvement of EEG and simple intelligence test(mini- getting the state examination, MMSE) after a year. Results:Of the 95 cases, medication compliance is 98.95%, 1patient lost during follow-up, no patients died. 10 of 94 subjects develop posttraumatic epilepsy. 1)Of the 95 cases, LPTS 12-mouth cumulative incidence of three groups is 3.33%, 12.50%,15.63%. there is significant between group A and group B, group A and group C.There is no significant difference between group B and group C. 2)The EEG12-mouth among the group A has be improved, there is not improvement among the group B and group C. 3)Initial MMSE score among three groups, there is no significant difference between group A and group B, group A and group C.Conclusions:Levetiracetam play a good role to prevent posttraumatic epilepsy, and can partially improve the EEG in patients with conditions.
