In recent years, medical disputes have gradually become an important subject in the field of health. This paper is based on 2013 "Shanghai City medical accidents and medical disputes analysis report" and data from a second grade hospital in Shanghai. This research uses the method of literature review and data analysis to understand the causes of medical disputes and the distribution in different hospitals. And finally some advices will be given to hospitals. This paper is divided into four parts.The first part is a summary. This pars describes the concept, the features and the status of medical dispute. The doctor-patient relationship is not only the relationship between doctors and patients, but also is a kind of social relations. Medical disputes include not only the adverse consequences of remedy, but also other reasons, such as unfriendly attitude, high expenses and so on. Medical disputes are professional, complicated and frequent and popular. The current situation of medical disputes is growing incidence, significant effect and doctors and patients’ being unsatisfied with the current situation.The second part is data analysis. Data were analyzed from eight aspects of treatment effect, service attitude, drug and equipment, expense, hospital management, others, departments and the disposal of medical disputes. The distribution of these problems in different hospitals is also described.The third part is to discuss the causes of medical disputes. The causes of medical disputes include factors in service process and disposal process. And the factors in service process are further divided to hospital factor, patient factor, government factor, and social factor. Hospital factors include negative behaviors in diagnosis and treatment, unskilled staff, ethics problems and imperfect institution. Patient factors include high expectation, violence events, behaviors obeying the rules and diversified demands. Government factors include the shortage and uneven distribution of medical resources, insufficient investment and compensation and poor price supervision. Social factors include negative reports from social media and the change of the demand of people. Factors in disposal process include the limitations of negotiation, administrative mediation and judicial proceedings. In the view of the distribution of medical disputes, the following results are found. First, the causes of medical disputes are similar in different hospitals. Second, there are more medical disputes in the second grade hospitals. Third, the problems of expense and management are serious in the third grade hospitals. Fourth, the problems of medicine and equipment are highlighted both in the first grade hospitals and the second grade hospitals.The fourth part is suggestions and advices for resolving doctor-patient disputes. 4 suggestions are proposed in this article. The first suggestion is to improve the plan for handling doctor-patient disputes. The second suggestion is to enhance the skills and communication training for doctors. The third suggestion is to introduce the way of alternative dispute resolution(ADR). The forth suggestion is to improve management mode with innovative methods.
