ObjectiveBased on the questionnaire of 254 nursing postgraduates from 14 domestic universities, the study is to explore the relationship between postgraduates’ sense of self-efficacy and their employment intention, to understand the influence factors of choosing career, and to provide the theoretical basis for universities to carry out psychological counseling and employment guidance, which can guide postgraduates to set up correct employment view gradually and choose job rationally. MethodsBy convenient sampling method, nursing postgraduates from 14 nursing colleges were selected as research objects to carry on the questionnaire survey. The questionnaire is divided into three parts, the first part of which is on the general information questionnaire, the second part of which is concerned about the employment influencing factors, including two dimensions of external and individual factors; the third part of which is adopted the general self-efficacy scale(GSES) which was designed by Schwarzer, the German clinical and health psychology expert. We adopted the field investigation on the colleges in Henan Province, while we sent the questionnaire to the persons in charge outside Henan Province, who printed the questionnaire and conducted it, then returned the questionnaire to us by mail. In this survey, 270 questionnaires were distributed, 254 valid questionnaires of which recovered. The effective recovery rate is 94%. Data were dealt with Epidata3.1 software double entry preparation and the statistical analysis was performed with SPSS17.0 software.Results1. Nursing postgraduates’ self-efficacy level influences the employment intention noticeably(p<0.05). The difference exists in different strength self-efficacy of nursing postgraduates on their choice of employment area, expected salary and expected work units. The stronger student’s self-efficacy is, the higher his employment orientation is.2. Among 11 external factors which influences postgraduates’ employment intention, the future promotion, the formal staff or not, wages, leadership emphasis, unit power scale rank top 5 external factors. In the eleven external factors, the promotion and development of space, the leadership emphasis, the permanent residence registered, the formal staff or not and unit location affect nursing postgraduates’ career intentions significantly(p<0.05).3. Among 11 individual factors to affect postgraduates’ employment intention, the personal values, the colleges’ popularity, individual professional knowledge and ability, foreign language level and social relationships rank Top 5 individual factors. In the eleven individual factors, the family background, social relationships and the impact of the family location affect the nursing postgraduates’ career intentions significantly(p<0.05).4. Based on the statistic data of the survey, nursing postgraduates’ satisfaction for the school’s career guidance is only 31.1%(2.8% very satisfied, relatively satisfied 28.3%), the majority of them are not satisfied with the attitude of career guidance. Conclusions1. The Self-efficacy affect nursing postgraduates’ employment intention. When choosing a career, nursing postgraduates with high self-efficacy have clear employment objective. The stronger student’s self-efficacy is, the higher his employment orientation is.2. When choosing a job, nursing students are influenced by various factors. Nowadays, they pay more attention to their own development and the ascension space which the work unit offers to them in the future.3. Teaching at university is the preferred career chose by nursing postgraduates, but in survey, the ratio of clinical staff selected is higher than the former, so the postgraduates’ employment is of more diversification and rationalization.
