Purpose:To explore the theoretical foundation and clinical efficacy of the Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM in treating chronic kidney diseases (CKD) by means of literature review and clinical observation. Methods:The Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM for treating CKD was proposed by referring to relevant literature, reviewing the historical evolution of CKD treatment methods and summarizing the experience of tutors.66 CKD3-5 patients under nondialytic treatment were selected and treated with the Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM. Then the symptoms both before and after the treatment and laboratory indicators were evaluated and analyzed so as to discuss the curative effect of the Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM on CKD treatment.Results:(1) Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM was explored further on the basis of summing up the experience of predecessors. It aimed to delay CKD development and improve clinical symptoms by combining basic treatment with various administration routes.(2) 66 CKD3-5 patients were classified according to different treatments of Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM as follows:group 1 with 7 patients given oral administration and intravenous infusion; group 2 with 27 patients given oral administration, intravenous infusion and sticking; group 3 with 13 patients given oral administration, intravenous infusion, sticking and clyster; group 4 with 11 patients given oral administration, intravenous infusion sticking and fumigation; group 5 with 8 patients given oral administration, intravenous infusion, sticking fumigation, and clyster. According to the clinical statistics, the items with comparatively higher points were lassitude followed by lumbar debility, edema, anorexia and Insomnia. Total points of the post-treatment symptoms in each group according to the treatment programs and grouping in different stages significantly decreased (p<0.01)(3) The serum creatinine in this group of patients presented an overall descending tendency. The average creatinine was (320.94±158.69) u mol/L when admitting to hospital while it was (297.74±172.78) μ mol/L when leaving hospital, which was of significant difference (P<0.01). The serum creatinine in group 4 decreased the most (p<0.05). Among CKD3-5 patients, the serum creatinine in CKD-4 patients decreased remarkably (p<0.05), the serum creatinine in CKD-3 patients remained almost the same before and after the treatment, while the serum creatinine in CKD-5 patients decreased slightly, all of which were of no statistical significance (p>0.05).(4) Concerning clinical efficacy, the overall efficiency of the patients of this group was 59.09%, among which the overall efficiency of CKD3 patients was 30.00%, that of CKD4 patients was 73.08%, and that of CKD5 patients was 56.67%,Conclusion:The Individualized Comprehensive Therapy of TCM has a good clinical efficacy in treating CKD3-5 patients under nondialytic treatment. It has good effect on improving clinical symptoms, stabilizing renal function and even decreasing serum creatinine, so it’s worth further study.
