Objectives:This study includes two goals:the first objective is to explore the principle of selecting acupoints along meridian in the treatment of essential hypertension with acupuncture, while the other one is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in essential hypertension.Methods:1. The data mining of morden acupuncture therapy in essential hypertension trailsBy means of computer and manual retrieval, we collect research literature about randomized controlled trials of acupuncture treating essential hypertension at home and abroad to establish a modern literature database about acupuncture treating essential hypertension, aiming to analyze the meridian belonging and point selecting rule in prescription of acupuncture treating essential hypertension.2. The clinical effectiveness evaluation of acupuncture therapy in essential hypertensionWe are conducting multi-centered, randomized controlled clinical trials. Based on the result of data mining previously and combined with epidemiological survey, we confirm the final treating program about syndrome diagnosis, meridian belonging and point selection. Total82subjects were gathered in accordance with the inclusive ctritera, then randomly assigned into treatment group and controlled group via central randomized method to undergoing puncturing intervention. Either group receives acupuncture treatment for30minutes each time,3times per week, which is more, participants owned a follow-up visit at third week after acupuncture treatment. We consider the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure during24hours as the main outcome, while the mean pressure in day and night, pulse pressure and pulse pressure index as the second outcomes, in order to assess the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture treating essential hypertension comprehensively. Results:1. The outcome of data mining(1)The prescription of acupuncture treating essential hypertension put emphasis on acupoint located on meridian of Jueyin and Yangming, especially the liver meridian of foot-jueyin, then the stomach meridian of foot-yangming and the large intestine meridian of hand-yangming.(2)Specific points at specific meridians are the most predominately used in the acupuncture prescription, particularly those five-shu points and primary points. The total frequency of acupoint utilization is314, in which the five top ones are LR3(47), LI11(35), ST36(27), GB20(27) and KI3(22).(3)The acupoint combination is focus on the five top points mentioned before, then the most commonly combined acupoints are:LI11with LR3, ST36with LR3,LR3with KI3, LR3with GB20, ST36with LI11.2. The outcome of clinical effectiveness evaluation(1)The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure during24hours:The MSBP and MDBP during24hours in treatment group is reduced after acupuncture therapy. There is significant differences between the value in week6(P<0.05), while also own a significant different with controlled group at the same time(P<0.05).(2)The mean pressure in day and night:The MSBP and MDBP in day time in treatment group is remarkably decreased after acupuncture intervention. The week6and base line compared with significant differences(P<0.05), while each has a significant different with controlled group at the same time(P<0.05). Conversely, the mean pressure in the night between treatment and controlled group has no significant difference, achieving no statistical significance at any time point(P>0.05).(3)The pulse pressure and pulse pressure index:The pulse pressure at week9is lowered obviously when compared with base line, showed significant differences(P<0.05). Moreover, the pulse pressure and pulse pressure index at other time points in these two group reveal no statistical significance(P>0.05). Conclusions:1. The acupuncture treating essential hypertension has a remarkable regularity in selecting acupoints along meridians, especially on specific points located on meridian of Jueyin and Yangming.2. Acupuncture at acupoint abtains a nice result in lowering blood pressure, either systolic or diastolic blood pressure, with some kind of continued effect and safety and efficiency.
