[Background] socio-economic development and the change of medical model put forward new requirements to postgraduate education in preventive medicine. Over the years, prevention has been primary health policy in our country. Objective of Postgraduate education in preventive medicine is to provide enough human resource to help improve population health level. To ensure and improve quality of postgraduate training in public health and preventive medicine become more urgent and prominent. This paper aims to analyze the association of characterization and performance of the graduate students at enrollment and that at the graduation, to track the academic records, the published papers and thesis, dating back to the admission-related factors, such as postgraduate enrollment ways, colleges which the undergraduate students graduated, and so on. These results have certain practical significance and provide a basis and reference of policy reform on enrollment entrance way and educational system.[Objective] To study is aimed to evaluate whether the quality of postgraduate students cultivation is related to the selected characteristics and performance of undergraduate students at enrollment.[Methods] All data were abstracted from a data bank in a management system of graduate students. The information of all candidates for exam during 2006 to 2012, information of the enrollments during 2006 to 2012 and information on graduates during 2007-2009 were used for our proposed study. Statistical software SPSS was used to process these data. The related parameters were present and the statistic comparison was done if necessary.[Results]1. In view of the sources of graduate students, the enrollments recommended by the universities without national admission examination had more advantage then the enrollments with national admission examination.2. The performance of various graduates from different universities seemed to be similar during three year graduate study periods. Those who think better universities can out put the better graduate students have no sufficient basis.3. The published papers, as a measure of the key indicators of graduate education quality, had no association with the admission ways and graduated colleges of the graduate students. The quantity and quality of published papers were related to disciplines which the students studied, the research projects (research funding) which the students participated in, and the tutor of the students.4. The quality of master’s thesis had some influence by the quality of postgraduate sources.[Conclusion] The results provide references for developing more effective recruitment measures, and for improving the quality of postgraduate training.
