Objective: Our study is to investigate the serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels, and its relations to clinical grading and specific Ig E in children with allergic rhinitis. At the same time, to discuss the role of serum vitamin D in allergic rhinitis. Methods: Ninety-nine children with allergic rhinitis from Hunan Children’s Hospital ENT outpatient were included in the study group, and thirty healthy children comprised the control group. The basic information, including name, sex, feeding history, and so on were collected. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay(CLIA). Specific Ig E levels were measured by revered enzyme immunoassay. All data were evaluated using the statistical software. Results: 1. The general comparisons of AR group and control group. There is no significant difference in age and sex between two groups. The compliance of vitamin D and calcium of two groups showed no statistically significant.(P>0.05). In the AR group, the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in preschool age group is higher than in school age group(P<0.05), while in the control group, there were no statistically significant in two groups(P>0.05). There was no gender difference in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in both the AR group and control group. 2. The comparisons of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels between AR group and control group. The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D was significantly lower in AR group than that of control group(66.71±21.07 VS 85.43±14.87 nmmol/L,P<0.05). We divided the serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D status into sufficiency, insufficiency, and deficiency. The vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were more common in AR group than in control group, which was statistically significant.(P<0.01). 3. The comparison of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels between mild group and moderate-to-severe group. The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D was significantly lower in moderate-to-severe group than that of mild group(60.39±17.81 VS 78.78±22.62nmol/L,P<0.01). 4. We divided the AR patients into seven groups according to the specific Ig E grade, which is from zero to six. There was a negative correlation between the specific Ig E grade and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels(r=-0.706, P=0.00). 5. The AR patients group is divided into two groups whether with or without complications. The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D is lower in the group with complications(58.17±16.98 VS 71.18±21.73nmol/L, P<0.05).Conclusions: 1.The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D is lower in AR patients. 2. The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D is lower in moderate-to-severe group than that of mild group. 3. The level of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D affects the emergence and development of allergic rhinitis.
