Abstract/Summary:
ObjectiveBy adopting the automatic self-heating wax heater and applying the advanced therapy, this study applied the patients of the experimental group who with diabetic peripheral neuropathy with hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax. When the experiment was over, the effects of treatment and the patients’ quality of life were evaluated, and then the mechanism of action was also be revealed. This research provided guidance and theoretical foundation for the application of the treatment and nursing service of the patients suffering from diabetic peripheral neuropathy. What’s more, it also widened the research thought for the study.MethodsThere were 160 cases of patients living with diabetic peripheral neuropathy being collected at the Endocrinology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. These illness cases were included in the diagnostic criteria of diabetic peripheral neuropathy which was put forward by WHOPNTF and conformed to the diagnostic criteria in TCM syndrome on diabetic peripheral neuropathy referred to Guide for Diabetes Prevention and Control Treated with TCM except kidney deficiency and blood stasis. Toronto Clinical Scoring System of neuropathy (TCSS) was applied to the preliminary screening. Patients who agreed to signed the informed consent, ranging from 40-80 years old with preliminary screening scores that over 6 were collected. Excluding those patients who suffered from peripheral neuropathy that resulted from other causes, worse compliance, being allergic to cinnamon or medical paraffin, foot injuries or anabrosis, combining with severe cardiovascular disease or severe hepatic and renal dysfunction. The patients who were included were divided into the experimental group and control group with random number table, with the proportion 1:1. The experimental group and the control group each had 80 cases. The control group was treated with the conventional therapies and care. On the basis of conventional therapies and care, the experimental group was added with the advanced therapy of hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax. Prior to the experiment, the baseline information and the data of the patients were collected and evaluated, according to the Toronto Clinical Scoring System of neuropathy (TCSS), quantitative criterion and grading system for diabetes symptoms as well as the specific measure of life quality of the diabetics. During the experimental session, the researchers observed the patients prudently. After the experiment, the scales above were adopted to evaluate the patients. And then all the collected data were put into the database and led in Software SPSS20.0 to be statistically analyzed. In accordance with the statistical results, the researchers carried out the analysis and evaluation on the effects and security of treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy with the advanced therapy of hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax.ResultsThis research brought in altogether 160 cases of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, of which 80 were in the control group and 80 were in the experimental group. During the research, in the control group, there were five patients who dropped out because of being transported to other hospitals and there were two patients who dropped out of this research because of refusing to cooperate with the observation continuously. All the rest patients finished the evaluation of the correlative index. There were three patients who dropped out of the experimental group because of being transported to other hospitals and there were three patients who dropped out as a result of refusing to the advanced therapy of hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax. All the other patients did finish the intervention of hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax, thus completing the evaluation of the correlative index. Eventually, in fact, altogether 147 patients completed this research, of which 73 in the control group and 74 in the experimental group.Prior to the treatment, the patients of the two groups were balanced in the basic information such as sex, age, blood sugar, duration of diabetes, duration of diabetes peripheral neuropathy and medications. Prior to the treatment, the factors of TCM symptoms, the TCSS scores in each item as well as the life quality of the two groups were not of significance (P>0.05)After 28 days of treatment, the integral scores of the TCM symptoms of the patients in the experimental group obviously reduced. What’s more, there appeared to be statistical significance in comparison with the integral scores of the control group after treatment (P<0.05).Of all the classified TCM symptoms, the patients in the experimental group mitigated evidently in degrees of symptoms of TCM. In addition, there had significant differences in the TCM symptoms such as numbness of limb, sleepy and heavy in head and body between the two groups after treatment (P<0.05). Also, the integral scores of Toronto Clinical Soring Scale of neuropathy of the patients in the experimental group obviously reduced. There appeared to be statistical significance in comparison with the integral scores of the control group after treatment (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of symptoms, reflection and feelings of the experimental group were evidently much lower than before. In addition, there had significant differences in the symptom scores and feelings scores between the two groups after treatment (P<0.05).In the quality of life, the patients in the experimental group got much lower marks than before in terms of biological dimension scores, psychological dimension scores, socially relational scores as well as treatment dimension scores. Besides, there had significant differences in the scores of the four dimensions between the two groups after treatment (P<0.05). There had significant differences in the curative effect of TCM symptoms between the experimental group and the control group (P< 0.05). The curative effect of TCSS evaluation of the two groups had significant differences (P<0.05).ConclusionIt is a significant supplement to the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine to treat patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy with hot compress on Yongquan Acupoints with cassia wax. Effectively stimulating Yongquan Acupoints with hot cassia wax can promote to activate blood, eliminate cold to stop pain, disperse blood stasis and dredge collateral and so on. It is simple, safe and reliable and effective to carry out this research. It effectively improves the quality of life of the patients who with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This treatment gives full play to the advantages of the traditional Chinese medicine such as low cost, being harmless and being prone to accept. The achievement of the research contributes greatly to developing the treatment of patients who live with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in the community and family. This means of treatment should be widely applied.
