Medical Case Study Of Medical Social Work Intervening In Cancer Patient

This paper is a study of medical social work practice for cancer patients’ casework intervention. In the 20 th century, the number of cancer patients in our country is increasing, cancer group is expanding. Cancer is a disease which brings physical, psychological torture to patients and heavy financial, mental stress to the family and strained China’s medical resources and caused contradiction between doctors and patients. Patients eager to get more psycho social and humanistic care, while existing medical model can’t meet their needs. As a self-help professional, medical social work intervention can use professional methods intervening in cancer patients by providing comprehensive care and psychological treatment for individuals. And improving the social environment of the patient, searching for economic help and constructing social support system for cancer patients. In order to achieve the best therapeutic effect in patients, ease physical pain and improve quality of life in the final stages of life.Based on literature, case interviews methods and depended on stage theory,behavioral theory, social support systems theory, crisis intervention theory., this paper reviewed related domestic and foreign medical social work intervention in cancer patients related literature, interviewed 18 cancer patients their family based on the oncology in X city of Shaanxi province. The article firstly analyzes the current situation and difficulties of the cancer, which show the number is large, and there exit economic difficulties, psychological and behavioral difficulties, support services difficulties. Secondly, two typical cases of intervention services is provide from the micro-level preparation by preparation- acceptation- intervention- close-assessment process. The first case is an old female later stage thyroid cancer, which is from the rural, owns low education level. social workers help her seek financial assistance, establish her sadness, certain her life significance by life review act,fulfile her last desire and make her last stages of life calmly; The second case is a young female early stage breast cancer, which is from the city, owns higher education. Social worker help her seek financial assistance, learn scientific knowledge about breast cancer and build social support system of friends, family, doctors and sufferers and reconstruct of physical and mental balance, which help the case be optimistic and peace for treatment.Finally, this paper summarizes the difficulties of medical social work intervention in cancer patient put forward the corresponding countermeasures based on field research and case intervention practice. The difficulties include medical social work implementation difficulties and ethical dilemmas when intervening in cancer patient. Measures are made from social work professional aspect. As to professional level, medical social work should strengthen itself, focus on training practical skills, conduct medical social work corresponding China’s conditions, respect the particularity of the case and understand the ethic environment. As to government policy level, the government should promote the development of medical social work profession and agencies.
