The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Renal Oncocytoma:Report Of Seven Cases And Review Of The Literature

Objective To study the clinical feature, diagnosis and treatment of renal oncocytoma. Methods The clinical data of 7 patients with renal oncocytoma in the department of urology of the first affiliated hospital of Guangxi Medical University were retrospectively analyzed.We combined with domestic and foreign literatures to summarize the diagnosis and treatment of renal oncocytoma by studying the clinical characteristics, imaging, pathology and ultrastructure. Results This group composed of 7 patients, including 5 males and 2 females, age range was 33 to 68 years old, the average age was 48 years old. There was 1 case misdiagnosed as adrenal gland tumor,3 cases were misdiagnosed as renal cell carcinoma and 3 cases were diagnosed as renal neoplasm.5 cases received radical nephrectomy,3 cases of which received laparoscopic surgery. Other 2 patients received partial nephrectomy, one of which received laparoscopic surgery. No recurrence or metastasis were reported from 5 months to 71 months after operation. Conclusions Renal oncocytoma is a type of rare neoplasm tends to be benign renal tumor. It has no specific characteristic on the clinical manifestation. Imaging may suggested to renal oncocytoma, but difficult to differential diagnosis with renal cell carcinoma. Only some of tumors were diagnosed by intraoperative frozen pathological examination, while the final diagnosis should depend on the feature histopathology, immunohistochemistry and even electron microscope. Nephron-sparing surgery was the first choice in the treatment of renal oncocytoma. The follow-up is essential for patients with tumors tended to infiltrate tissue surrounding or combined with malignancy tissues.
