Evaluation On Reliability And Validity Of The Chinese Version Of Housebound Scale In Elderly People

Objectives To translate Housebound scale into Chinese from Japanese,meanwhile, Afour stepped Process adapted from Brislin’s translation model was applied to translateand develop Housebound scale.And the reliability, validity and acceptability of scale wasevaluated to provide evidence to explore the suitable tool of the evaluation ofHousebound status and reason.Methods1In obtaining permission from the author, first of all, we translated and culturedebugged Housebound scale, for inconsistencies revised repeatedly; Then Through thecomparative analysis and preliminary experiments,and We integrated expert and theelderly suggestion, to determine the entry of Chinese Housebound scale.2855Chineseelderly people (≥60years old) from two communities totally completed the evaluation ofHousebound scale. The indices of the evaluation included reliability and validityevaluation,such as re-test reliability, inner-consistency reliability and dichotomy reliability;validity,structure validity,and discriminant validity. Acceptability evaluation included thecompleteness of the scale, the time used in answering the Chinese Housebound scale.Results1Through item analysis,the28-item Chinese version of Housebound scale wasdeveloped.2The Cronbach’s α coefficient of the first and second subscales were0.743and0.853;the split-half reliability were0.856and0.816;the re-test reliability were0.830(95%CI=0.608～0.934),0.878(95%CI=0.663～0.945).3The convergent validityratio were0.960and0.910. The difference scores of the middle-age and elderly peoplewere statisticallysignificant (t=2.289, P=0.028). Four factors were extracted by a factoranalysis, which explained48.37%of the total variance. Include body and mental factors,environmental factors, psychological and social factors, seeing and listening factors. Theloading value of each items in their respective common factor ranged from0.42to0.82.4Acceptability: The rate of completion of the Housebound scale reached100%, thequalified rate of the Housebound scale reached99.4%.Of all the investigations, theshortest time to complete the Housebound scale was5minutes, and the longest time was 10minutes.Conclusions The evidence collected in this study has shown that the Housebound scalewas with good reliability and validity. It can be used as the tool to evaluate theHousebound among Chinese elderly people.
