This study investigates the usage of antibiotics in the rural areas of JiangxiProvince via physician and patient relationship. The investigation begins withreviewing the history of antibiotics in China. The government once raised theantibiotic industry up to a level of state’s will after the People’s Republic of Chinawas founded, which increased the ordinary people’s accessibility to antibiotics.During the Cultural Revolution, on hearing Chairman Mao’s inquiring, thegovernment built a nationwide barefoot doctor system and cooperative medicalservice for rural areas by means of powerful political mobilization. Influenced by thelocal human kindness and national political campaigns, antibiotic handled by the barefoot doctors began abusing in rural areas. After the Cultural Revolution, the army ofbarefoot doctor collapsed rising from the implementing of Household ContractResponsibility System with Remuneration Linked to Output. As the health caresystem in rural areas experienced a great adjustment,a few private-for-profit clinicsestablished and coexisted with t not-for-profit Village clinics. As a result, the abuse ofantibiotics continued and became increasingly serious in the market economy era. Thevillage doctors tend to meet the patients’ demands for more medicine in addition tosupporting the medical care services by dealing of drugs, or the customers will turnunsatisfied. The physician-patient relationships in the collective economy system andmarket education system played a similar role on the issue of antibiotics abuse in ruralareas. The above mentioned are the sociological explanations given by the study forthe phenomenon of antibiotic abuse in rural area.
