Infection is the most common complication of stroke patients, butalso one of the leading causes of death in stroke patients. To find out theprecautions against post stroke infection, understanding the characteristicsand risk factors of post stroke infection is very important. There are lots ofstroke patients in neurological intensive care unit (NICU), which makeshospital infections occur in stroke patients an important part of the hospitalinfections in neurological intensive care unit. But the infections occur instroke patients may be different with the ones occur in non-stroke patientsdue to their special pathogenesis. To understand the characteristics of poststroke infection and hospital infections occur in stroke patients, aretrospective analysis of the relevant data about stroke and non-strokepatients admitted in the NICU of the first affiliated hospital of Chongqingmedical university from October,2013to December,2013was made, according to which we found that post stroke infections occurred in strokepatients in the NICU were with high incidences, and most of theseinfections occurred within72hours after stroke onset, most of the pathogenic bacteria were opportunistic pathogens, and post strokeinfections had huge impact on in-hospital mortality, length of stay andhospitalization expenses. And we also found that hospital infectionsoccurred in stroke patients accounted for a large proportion of hospitalinfections in NICU, and what made hospital infections of stroke patientsdifferent from these of non-stroke patients is a higher incidence, and theclinical features of the hospital-acquired lung infections occurred in strokepatient. Prophylactic use of antibiotics and immune-modulators may beeffective measures to prevent stroke infection based on its pathogenesis andcharacteristics. In addition, measures focus on other risk factors forstroke-associated pneumonia and general preventive measures of hospitalinfection also should be taken seriously.
