BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease is one of the hazards to human health of chronic non communicable diseases. According to the Ministry of Health issued in2007China cause of death statistics, respiratory dise-ases (mainly COPD) are the fourth leading cause of death in city populat-ions, which is third in rural populations. When combined with chronic pul-monary heart disease, deterioration is furthered in the quality of patie-nts’life, causing the mortality higher. Currently, the model of chronic d-isease management of COPD complicated with pulmonary heart disease is st-ill not perfect, which imitates the model of foreign developed countries. B ecause of the lack of local characteristics, which is not easy for domest-ic patients to accept. Some of the patients have little appetite because of illness, anxiety and fear, which can lead to malnutrition. Patients with malnutrition have low immunity, that can cause the condition to repeat. Med icated diet of TCM has the characteristic of drugs and food, which can imp rove patients’appetite.ObjectivesTo evaluate the efficacy of medicated diet of TCM in improving malnutrition status of stable COPD patients complicated with chronic cor pulmonale;to evaluate the efficacy of medicated diet of TCM in improving these patients’ quality of life;to build the model of the medicated diet of TCM that can be used in chronic disease management. MethodsTwenty-seven stable COPD patients complicated with chronic cor pulmon-ale, who met the inclusive criteria were recruited from in-patients in th -e second affiliated hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chin-ese Medicine. All the recruited patients were treated by the medicated di-et of TCM for3months. Data were collected at baseline and after interve ntion. During the first week after enrollment patients received COPD self-management education delivered by a Respiratory doctor using a workbook.ResultsDuring the three months, soup, dishes and drink ranked the top three in the usage of medicinal food in patients with deficiency of both the lung and the kidney with stagnation of phlegm and blood stasis in collaterals. The same to the patients with reversed flow of qi due to the heart-lung-kidney deficiency. Soup was the most popular diet in patients with reversed flow of qi and dryness-heart due to deficiency of yin. There was no significant difference in BMI after3months (P<0.05). Si-gnificant differences were found in PRO, TMS, F3S and F4S compared to base line(P<0.05).ConclusionSoup and dishes are the most popular diet. Patients’BMI kept stable during there months. Medicated diet of TCM can benefit COPD patients with cardic complication in their quality of life.
