ObjectiveTo investigate patients' cognition in COPD and its impacts on quality of life, in order to improve patients' cognitive abilities, establish good healthy behaviors, control and delay the progression of the disease and improve patients'quality of life. It can provide some scientific clue on the comprehensive prophylaxis and treatment on community COPD.MethodsThe outpatients meeting the diagnosing and grading criterions of 2007 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Diagnosis and Treatment of the Draft Specification are included, all of them will fill out National Awareness Questionnaire of Disease in Patients with COPD. To assess quality of life of patients, they also should finish filling out SGRQ questionnaire, and receiving pulmonary function test.Results226 out patients were collected. The average age of 65.36±9.67 years, age ranging from 39 to 87 years. socio-economic status was low, mainly farmers (36.8%), followed by workers (19.9%). education level was low, most middle and junior school (73.5%). Payment of medical expenses in a higher proportion of their own expenses (32.3%), secondary only to patients with social security (32.3%); the economic income less than 1,000 yuan accounted for 61.1%. Patients with moderate to severe disease accounted for 75.2%. BMI was generally low. More smokers (73.9%), smoking age is long. Awarenesses of name for COPD, disease contents, risk factors (smoking), acute exacerbation of the disease were low, the total proportion of completely noncognitive was more than half. most patients were vague with COPD treatment, therapeutic purposes and principles of the concept. Treatment status was not ideal. High income, high education level, the more serious condition patients were better to know those. COPD patients' quality of life were generally low, activity limitation was observed most obvious, followed by the impaired social abilities and psychological barriers caused by airway disease. Quality of life correlating with education, smoking, severity stage, BMI grading had statistical significant.DiscussionThe results of the investigation indicate that outpatients were old. Their education level and socio-economic status was low. Financial condition was heavy. Lung function condition was worse. Patients'cognitive abilities were in more serious condition.Their obedience was worse. Treatment status was not ideal. Many people had bad health behavior(smoking).Widespread was in bad nutri- tional status.Efforts should be made to increase public awareness and improve the prevention and treatment of COPD.Patients'cognitive abilities correlate with their education level and their socio- economic status and financial condition.Quality of life of patienis with COPD is generally low.Quality of life can been effected by education, smoking, the course of disease, cognitive abilities the,the ratio of to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC), percentage of predicted FEV1 and BMI index. QOF of Patients would be improved by the cognitive abilities'improving.ConclusionThe awareness of disease generally is low in COPD patients, and the quality of life is poor. Therefore, we should further improve the integrated prophylaxis and treatment level of COPD.
