ObjectiveThis study uses small sample randomized controlled test methods to study "Huiyang Nine Points" Acupuncture Method and compare to a controlled group which was treated simply with conventional acupuncture method. In order to meet the diagnostic criteria, dampness-heat syndrome is not included in the study, but the other syndromes are included. The study also explores the effects of "Huiyang Nine Points" Acupuncture Method. This method is not confined to dealing with Yin and Yang collapse pattern only. Combined with other local point combinations, the study evaluates the effect and feasibility of "Huiyang Nine Points" Acupuncture Method on Sciatic nerve pain that caused by lumbar herniated disc.MethodSixty (60) cases that meet the diagnostic criteria are collected. They are randomly divided into two groups.30patients belong to the treatment group (which adopt the "Huiyang Nine Points" Method (which include routine acupuncture treatment). The other30patients belong to the control group (which take traditional acupuncture only). Both groups have taken a5-day course of treatment based on a single acupuncture treatment each day. The sciatic nerve pain before and after the treatment course are evaluated using Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) Scores, ADL and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Statistical software SPSS19.0is used to analyse and compare the results between the treatment group and the control group using chi-square test X2, t-test and Ridit analysis.ResultsThe assessment indicators, including gender, age, syndrome diagnosed, JOA, VAS and Barthel assessment scores before treatment, of the two groups are assessed and compared. The differences are analyzed with statistical method (p>0.05), hence such differences are of no statistical significance. The difference in cure efficacy rate between the treatment and the control groups of lumbar disc herniation secondary sciatica patients are analysed. The cure efficacy rate of the treatment group is93.33%and the cure rate of the control group is83.3%. This indicates the more superior curing efficacy of "Huiyang Nine Points" acupuncture treatment. The statistical analysis of the differences shows that they have statistical significance (P<0.05).The JOA scores of the treatment group and the control group have significant differences between them. The "Huiyang Nine Points" acupuncture treatment group and the conventional acupuncture control group both have clinical improvement, but the scores of the "Huiyang Nine Points" group are better, indicating it is clinically superior. The difference between the two groups has been analysed and found to be statistically significant (P<0.05).The VAS scores (Visual Analogue Scale) of the treatment group and the control group have significant differences them. The "Huiyang Nine Points" acupuncture treatment group and the conventional acupuncture control group both have clinical improvements, but the scores of the "Huiyang Nine Points" group are better, indicating the method is clinically superior in terms of dealing with pain level. The difference between the two groups is analysed and found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). The ADL index (Barthel scale of the treatment and control groups have no differences, hence they have no statistical significance (P>0.05) in this study. Conclusion"Huiyang Nine Points" conbined acupuncture treatment is more effective for treating lumbar disc herniation secondary sciatica. This confirms combined treatment with our country’s conventional acupuncture has added value in treatment.
