Hami melon as the characteristic fruit of China Xinjiang region, is the geographical indications products of the region. With the continuous improvement of the national economy, consumers are increasingly demanding high quality Hami melon. To achieve Hami melon’s brand strategy, we must improve the current level of Hami melon’s postproduction. However, the current domestic detection and classification of Hami melon is still done manually, this method is not only large amount of labor, and low productivity. Therefore, to develop a Hami melon detecting and grading equipment is the current urgent need, which can effectively improve the level of Hami melon’s postproduction.In this paper, on the basis of Hami melon’s material properties data, comprehensive utilization of the modern mechanical design method for the current requirement of Hami melon’s detecting and grading based on machine vision technology, we design a new type of Hami melon classification and test device,and complete its key components’ improved design, and determine the machine parameters and performance by experimental. The main results as follows:1. This paper propose a design method of Hami melon classification and test device based on the principle of single roller pushing on an incline, after summarize the basic principles of the original Hami melon grading machinery. Successfully achieve Hami melon’s rotation during conveying, and provide theoretical support for Hami melon’s continuous online detecting and grading.2. We establish a Hami melon material properties database, by collected 100 Hami melon samples’ s material properties data, which including Hami melon weight, transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter,images and so on. And on this basis, using the three-dimensional software Pro / ENGINEER to complete the overall design of the structure and parameters of Hami melon classification and test device.3. Depending on the shape features and physical image information of Hami melon, this paper proposes a new design method based on MATLAB discrete points fitting for the waist tapered carrying idlers of Hami melon. By the overall and grouping fitting of the discrete points data which collected from the boundaries of 100 Hami melon samples, we have established an average curve model of Hami melon outline. The calculation results shows that: the correlation coefficient of the average curve model and the actual outline curve of Hami melon is 0.9496, and the the standard error RMSE is 10.73. And completed the structure and parameters design of the waist tapered carrying idlers of Hami melon based on the average curve model of Hami melon outline.4. According to Hami melon’s weight, transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter and other basic materials data, this paper design a compressible biconical carrying idler of Hami melon with a new method,and complet its parameters design and force analysis. The calculation results shows that: the angle between the hypotenuse and the center axis of the tapered roller is 29°, the spring stiffness is 0.048N/mm when the inclined plate’s inclination angle is 15°, and other important parameters.5. This paper complete the experimentals by the prototype production of Hami melon classification and test device. Through the inclination angle experimental of Hami melon classification and test device’s inclined plate, verify and determine that the critical angle that exists relative sliding between Hami melon and the waist tapered carrying idlers of Hami melon is in the range of 4 ~ 8 °, and the minimum safety angle that does not exist relative sliding between Hami melon and the waist tapered carrying idlers of Hami melon is in the range of 12 ~ 16 °. Through the performance comparison experimental of Hami melon classification and test device’s carrying idlers, get the following conclusions: 1) At the three kinds of speed that 2 or 4 or 6t/h Yield corresponding to, steady rate of the compressible biconical carrying idlerrespectively higher than the waist tapered carrying idlers about 6%, 10%, 13%. 2) When the running speed change to 6 t/h from 2 t/h, steady rate of the waist tapered carrying idlers fell by 15% while the compressible biconical carrying idler fell by 8%. 3) The compressible biconical carrying idlers for different sizes of Hami melon adaptability than the waist tapered carrying idlers. Through the grading actuator’s action test of Hami melon classification and test device, verified the feasibility of the grading actuator designed by this article, and determining Hami melon classification and test device’s yield in the range of 2to 4 tons / hour.According to design and research of Hami melon classification and test device, this paper complete the experimentals by the prototype production of it, and determine the overall structure and application parameters of the device. This provides a useful reference for the development of Hami melon detecting and grading equipment, it is of great significance to enhance the level of Hami melon’s postproduction.
