The research and development industry is a new type of industry, it plays an important role in the era of knowledge economy. In addition, it is also increasingly become an important symbol of the comprehensive strength of a country or region.Through the promotion of R&D industry competitiveness and enhance the competitiveness of the region or country has gradually become an important way to enhance the overall competitiveness of a country or region.This paper combines the theory of economic geography and regional economics.From the perspective of industrial competitiveness, the research object is the research and development industry competitiveness of China’s mainland provinces. On the basis of defining the connotation and characteristics of the competitive power of R&D industry and the establishment of a comprehensive evaluation system, the space time evolution characteristics of R&D industry competitiveness in China’s provinces and autonomous regions are studied.The content of this paper consists of seven chapters. The whole is divided into three parts.The first part is based on the literature review on the research to build the evaluation system of industrial competitiveness, and the establishment of China’s provinces in the database index system in 1999 to 2014, using a comprehensive evaluation method for the empirical measure of the competitiveness of China’s industrial development. The second part is the analysis of the competitiveness of China’s R&D industry spatial and temporal evolution based on the comprehensive score of the provinces, and the competitiveness of China’s provincial R&D industry is divided into four levels,they are strong competitiveness of regional type, competitive type, strong competitiveness and weak competitiveness. The results showed that Beijing is in the domestic leading position, its competitiveness is the engine of Chinese R&D industry, and remained stable in the four years. Shanghai, Jiangsu,Guangdong is located in the competitiveness of the second echelon, Zhejiang, Tianjin,Sichuan, Shandong, Liaoning, Hubei, Shaanxi, Henan ranked the third echelon. Over time, The difference in the level of competitiveness between the three regions in China is changed from falling to rising.The eastern part of the competitiveness of the level of difference is from the rise to fall.The differences of R&D competitiveness have been weakened. The difference of competitiveness between the West and the central region has experienced minor fluctuation growth and decline.Overall maintain a low level of stability.In the third part, using ESDA exploratory spatial data analysis, ArcGIS Geo Da software and the coefficient of variation and Moran’s I index, G index, gravity and standard deviation ellipse method, and I selects four time section analysis of China’s industrial competitiveness research spatial pattern and evolution. The results show that each province in China R&D industry overall competitiveness increase, the three areas of R&D industry competitiveness presents a step difference distribution, and the competitiveness of the spatial pattern appeared in Northeast southwest direction of migration of north south direction, focus on the overall development of industrial competitiveness in North and eastern coastal location shift. G index analysis showed that the development of industry competitiveness shows obvious spatial agglomeration, regional hot spots with varying degrees of narrowing trend, cold zone stage of expansion, the overall spatial pattern showed two hot core periphery area in Beijing and Shanghai as the core and radiation to Xinjiang, Qinghai, Sichuan,Guizhou as the cold point axis with the competitiveness of China’s provincial R&D industry maintained a certain degree of spatial dependence and locking.In the fourth part, from the regional economic structure and development level of industrial innovation, policy support and regional open standards and other aspects of the influencing factors of China’s provinces and the evolution of East and West three regions development space industry competitiveness. Analysis of driving factors and comprehensive index correlation index method, technical personnel, regional development level, the degree of information, government behavior and economic development level of China’s industrial competitiveness evolution time research the important influence factors, the per capita GDP and high-quality technical personnel is the most important factor affecting the comprehensive score of the two competitive research area, and research and development industrial competitiveness has great relevance; At the end of the paper, the paper summarizes the shortcomings of the paper and puts forward the possibility of regional comparative research on the competitiveness of R&D industry.
