Research On Economic Change Of Beijing Niujie Street

Niujie is an area where the ethnic people inhabit in Beijing. Huge changes has taken place in Niujie after 30 years’ development with the implementation of reform and opening-up policy. It has become the largest ethnic community in Beijing. Therefore, Niujie’s economy is worthy of deep research. It is also a window to show the solidarity and improvement of Chinese ethnic groups.This paper summarizes the development experience of Niujie’s economy by analyzing logically Niujie’s economic evolution in different historical stages. The first chapter dates back to the origin of Niujie’s name, how Hui people’s inhabitation area is generated and developed in Niujie, and the political, economic and cultural events occurring in Niujie in different historical stages. Also, it shows how an important role Niujie plays in present Beijing and describes the economic characteristics of Niujie. By conducting the field research, this paper gives the statistics evidence of the constitution of Niujie’s population and ethnic groups. The second chapter introduces the social background, economic policy and mechanism of Niujie’s economy as well as people’s major living means in Niujie in Ming and Qing Dynasties. The third chapter probes into the social background, economic policy and mechanism of Niujie’s economy in the Republic of China, and the changes of residents’ livelihood.The fourth chapter shows the economic background and evolution of Niujie from 1949 to 1978, which is divided into two stages:one is 1949-1966, and the other is 1967-1978. This chapter shows how the local government supports Niujie’s economy with the preferential policy.The fifth chapter introduces Niujie’s economic background after 1978, the evolution of Niujie’s community caused by the regional reform in the early years of 1990s and the evolution of Niujie’s economy structure. This paper is aimed to discuss how to upgrade and optimize Niujie’s economy in the future.This paper demonstrates elaborately Niujie’s economic development and analyzes its economic policies and characteristics in different historical stages. Niujie is a famous ethnic commercial community in Beijing. Its economic development is in the interest of the ethnic community. It is a window showing the harmonious relationship of ethnic groups in Beijing.
