The presence of a large number of the “4+2+1†inverted-pyramid family structure leads to emptiness and miniaturization of families. The institutions’ facilities for the elderly play great advantages of “medical + pension†in the medical-nursing combined mode, With lacks in various aspects, e.g., Facilities layout, functional configuration, space design, etc. This paper discusses and guides functional configuration of institutions’ facilities for the elderly and design researches on space adaptability in the medical-nursing combined mode by targeting device-aided elderly, nursing-cared elderly and self-care elderly.The paper analyzes research backgrounds and current situations both at home and abroad, identifies basic issues, e.g., research objects, purposes, significance and framework and systematically explains relevant concepts involved in research topics. First, it deeply analyzes physiology, psychology and behaviors of the elderly and concludes with the particular needs for living space and environment as well as its specific reflection on spatial design. Through the detailed survey and analysis of institutions’ facility space for the elderly in the medical-nursing combined mode, it summarizes the status quos and its general problems. Then, the paper studies the concepts, feasibility, types and formsof achievements of the medical-nursing combined mode and analyzes the spatial development morphology under the mode as well as types of functional spaces and demands for the overall spatial configuration. Thereby, it further makes the research’s entry point clearer. Based on it, analysis and researches aremade on the adaptive design of medical rehabilitation space, public functionsspace and nursing care space of institutions’ facilities for the elderly. Then, after absorbing design methods from classic domestic and foreign cases, the paper proposes methods and strategies for spatially adaptive design and facility configuration.
