The Research On Building Silenced Space

Spirit,as the relative concept with matter,occupies an important position in the field of architecture.The theory and understanding of spirit is a complex issue,but have a great research space and research value.Louis I.Kahn's thoughts brought the thinking of spirit for modern architecture,and his buildings are more profound.This thesis extracted a concept of “Silenced Space” through comprehending “Silence and Light” said by Louis I.Kahn.The purpose is to discuss: What kind of architectural space is what Louis I.Kahn calls a “light”? What kind of “light” could get what Louis I.Kahn calls a “silence”? Through the research of these problems,the building methods of silenced space were concluded.Firstly,through the analysis on Louis I.Kahn's thoughts of spatial spirit,it is concluded that the key to comprehending “silence” is the awareness of the consciousness about the existence of oneself and that the thought enlightenments of building silenced space are “tranquil dwelling” and “respect and fear”.Secondly,through the comparison and analysis on cases of the four sources,it is concluded that the three main points of building silenced space from “tranquil dwelling” are: importing nature brings about tranquility,which builds “tranquil”,the stabilization and enclosure provide shelter,which builds “dwelling”,the purified space purifies the mood,which connect “tranquil” with “dwelling”,that the three main points of building silenced space from “respect and fear” are: the scale revealing the power of space builds “fear”,the order creating the artistic conception of space builds “respect”,the texture adjusting the temperament of the space balances “respect” and “fear”,that the three characteristics of light and shadow in building silenced space are: light and shadow build shape,light forms hazy light-domain,light guides spirit to be released.Finally,this thesis summed up two methods of building silenced space from “tranquil dwelling” and “respect and fear”,and indicated the scope of the application of silenced space,and revealed the essential of building silenced space that emphasizing the consciousness of external existence.
