Research Of Datong City Public Space Design Based On “Civic Life”

Public space plays an important role in the urban life, which not only affects people’s daily activity and spiritual life, but also affects the well-being of citizens. Therefore, the public space has become an important criterion to judge the overall development level of town. Ranging from roadside greenbelt to a few public parks meeting the basic daily life needs of a small amount of citizens, Datong has gone through many layers of update changes to enrich experience of citizens. However, it is far from state of mature. Therefore, it is necessary to comb the model and evolution process of Datong public space, which summarizes the merits and shortcomings and presents some suggestions for the future development of Datong public space.This thesis reviews the history of the city of Datong, summarizes the focus of city development and city culture and analyzes current situation of Datong public space and the characteristics of Datong public life to emphasize the significance of public space for citizen’s life. The specific forms of the public space and activity type of citizens are discussed via on-the-spot investigation. Moreover, the design strategies of Datong public space are proposed based on the theoretical basis of "civic life" at the end of the paper, which respectively are promotion of public communication, return to daily life, inheritance of folk culture, and improvement of public facilities. The strategies above are introduced from aspects of space types, spatial scale, road planning, boundary design, increasing the sense of place and so on. In all, this thesis aims to make people’s daily life integrate into the design of public space and create a vibrant and fulfilling scene in the city public space.
