Research On The Building Type And Evolution Of Zhuangyuanfang Area In Guangzhou

Zhuangyuanfang Area, which locates in the Yuexiu district of Guangzhou, has a long history of more than 700 years and is famous for being a craftwork exclusive street. With years’ development, this area has formed diversified commercial form and material space. Distinctive space texture and building style reflect the historical memory and local complex, which enables the area to become the symbol of the city. This paper uses Caniggia’s architectural typology theory to research on the building types of this area. Based on the analysis of the relationship between the feature of building type and the development background, this paper tends to discuss the difference and evolvement mechanism of different building types in this area and then put forward to the general protection of this texture. This research is an application of the architectural typology theory in our country.Building type is formed in the context of specific history, society, economy and culture. This paper divides the research into five historical periods: late Qing Dynasty, period of Republic of China, early years of People’s Republic of China, early era of reform and opening-up and the period after 1990 s. Based on Caniggia’s research method of architectural typology and combining with the historical materials and the current situation from field research, this paper classifies the buildings of different periods, which forms different building types and then evaluate each type of different periods. The analysis of features of each building types reflects the economic, cultural and living connotation of the period that contained different building types and also analyzed the relationship between different types.This paper includes nine chapters. Chapter one is the introduction section that contains research background, research objects, domestic and international research actuality, interpretation of relevant concepts, research target, research methods and research framework. Another chapters are the body parts of this paper. Chapter two describes the general situation of Zhuangyuanfang Area and summarizes the process of historical development. Then it divides the building types into five periods guided by the research target and establishes the criteria of different types. The next five chapters demonstrate the building types of different periods in detail, like describing the historical background, summarizing features through plane layout, fa?ade form, building structure and material, analyzing the formation mechanism, summarizing the features of synchronic variant and the produce of types in each period, evaluating the building types of corresponding period and estimating whether the building types in Zhuangyuanfang Area meet the demand of the times according to the research method of architectural typology. Chapter eight combines all the building types and summarizes the influence factors. At last, this chapter compares each building types and “variant” through cases. The conclusion section summarizes the features of different building types and the evolvement mechanism in Zhuangyuanfang Area.The author hopes that through this research, we can know more about the construction of Zhuangyuanfang Area in hundreds of years and provide data support for city interpretation as well as reference for the coming protection and renewal.
