Landscape Planning And Design With Planting Space

Planting space is an important part of planting design, as well as the research hotspot in recent years. Researchers have made some generalization on Images, types, and structures of landscape planting. But subjected to the organic of natural space and the particularity of vegetation, purely geometric forms cannot describe the general planting space form in most landscape, especially in natural style landscape. This research is based on the cognition of space, and the feature of plants. By studying the typical cases of parks in Hangzhou west lake, and using diagrams to illustrated, the research discovers a set of methods in planting design, bridging the gap from concept to design.In planning stage, influence factors of space arrangements, scale and proportion is summarized. Three basic space form are introduced, including Room Type, Flowing Type and Group Type, from which two advanced types--Transition Type and Composite Type were derived. In addition, layer thinking is used to deal with relationships between space and other landscape elements.In design stage, the elements of space component--structure and skeleton, defining and surroundings, details and decoration, were discussed respectively concerning their planting methods and design key points. The structure and skeleton forms the framework of space with large trees, controlling the canopy shape of landscape. Define and surroundings refers to small trees and large shrubs, which barrier visitors’ view in space. It complemented upper trees in terms of planting methods and evergreen or deciduous. The details and the decoration is small shrub and grass, enhancing the quality of plant landscape space. In the case study of different types of space form, these planting methods have some common characters in room type, flowing type and group type.
