The Research On Residential Planning And Buildings Of Overseas Chinese New Town In Guangzhou

1950’s experienced rapid transformations of new China, involving political system, economic system and the concept of culture. To solve the problem of housing became an important task in post-war reconstruction. During the process of solving, Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou became the first large-scale residential area for overseas Chinese built after the founding of the republic. Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou was founded on May, 1955, located in the hills of the south of Baiyun Mountain, just the eastern outskirts of Guangzhou Old Town. The planning of New Town, whose buildings mainly consisted of single house with private courtyard in 2 and 3 levels, was divided into 2 periods to construct. Meanwhile, public buildings and places were built, such as Primary School for Overseas Chinese, kindergarten, playground and public garden etc. Its planning and architecture design were quite different from other residential district in the same period. The result showed the identity, and past experience played a role in facing the present demand.The individualism of Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou brought about that it cannot be seen as a common architectural phenomenon to discuss; moreover, the particularity of its using entity lead it to a special sample of new residential design model at the Early Stage of New China. In this paper, the new town in Guangzhou is treated as an important part in the process of the history in modern architectural design in New China. Based on clarification and analysis on related historical data, such as policy, characters, design features, construction technology, etc., this paper tries to discuss the characteristic in planning and architectural design, and analyzes the origin and development process of the design concept.There are five chapters. Chapter one describes the related research on Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou, and also makes an introduction about the object, background, significance and methods of the research. Chapter two reviews the construction of the town, analyzing related factors such as the way of organize, design and construction unit, household situation, comprising basis for later analysis. By analyzing the blueprint, historic archives and present situations, Chapter three and chapter four make further analysis on planning and architectural design of the town, trying to summarize characteristic in planning and architectural design, search for the origin of the design concept. Last chapter is the conclusion of this paper.The research of this paper firstly clarify the controversial issues, including the planning scale, staging, and design institute of Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou. Secondly, to elaborate the planning features of Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou from the perspective of planning structure, terrain, and lot division, links are revealed between the planning concept of Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou and such planning thoughts, Model Residential Area. Thirdly, the building type of Overseas Chinese New Town in Guangzhou is confirmed; and by analyzing, the paper discuss its its architectural style, materials and technologies of building, while the materials and technologies of building inherited from the development and practice in the 20 s and 30 s of ROC, and added its exploration and development of the technologies and form to regional climate adaptability.
