Study On The Process Of Oveasea Chinese New Town In Guangzhou

Guangzhou, the city lies on the south tip of China, was dedicated to start its reconstruction inthe early years of the Republic after being suffered a century-long colonization by westerncountries and the unrests of wars. Although industry rebuilding is the first priority among thereconstruction schemes, the municipal authories did not forget the citizens’ urgent need forpublic housing. To express the caring and respect to the Oversea Chinese, Huaqiao Xincunwas therefore emerged as the fisrt mass residential area of Guangzhou.The design and construction of Huaqiao Xincun were under guidance of a group of talentedarchitects who not only had oversea modern educational backgrounds but also upheld thetraditional Cantonese architectural concepts. Both the overall planning of the residential areaand individual designs of single buildings are in a economical, practical, and standardizedway due to the shortage of materials, but they still embodied a perfect combination of featuresof modern architectural standards and traditional Cantonese concepts. After the completion ofHuaqiao Xincun, a large number of Oversea Chinese and celebrities were attracted to settledown, who then produced significant impacts on the surrounding areas and Guangzhou’sfuture construction.In this thesis, the original data and blueprints produced in every steps of the construction ofHuaqiao Xincun will be well collected and assorted. Detailed analysis and study on revealingthe creative ideas and concepts in the planning and designs among the emergence of theresidential area will be based on them. This thesis will also pay respect to the architects’courage to amend Western Modernism concepts with the actual situations of Guangdongregion. Huaqiao Xincun is a private residence project of the nature in the special backgroundof planned economic and socialist construction. Studying its unique patterns in projectconstruction and project management, analysing the residents’ living conditions and theirsocial lives, will show us the positive effects and contributions of the returnees and theirrelatives on China’s social developments. Exploring the significance and inspiration ofprotecting Huaqiao Xincun as historical region in contemporary time, and its role and impacton Guangzhou urban construction, will help us discovering the unique characteristic ofGuangzhou, reunderstanding the nature of urban constrution, and will provide us somepractical principles on maintaining traditional Cantonese characteristics in Guangzhou urbanconstruction under the impact of globalization in modern design concepts.
