A Study On The Facade Detail Features Of The Residential Buildings Of Nanjing In Modern Periods (1840-1927) And The Restoration Strategy

The “House of Sun Yatsen”,located at No.22 Hankou Road,belong to the Gulou Southern Campus of Nanjing University today.It has been named since at the 1912,Dr.Sun Yatsen,as the interim president of the Republic of China,stayed temporary this house(still need to be verified),was built in1911.After more than 100 years,with the development of the campus and the city,it witnessed the entire process of the former campus of University of Nanking from southern part to the north.Here have left many footprints of historical celebrities at home and abroad,such as the missionary Bullock and his wife,the Hummel family,who is the pastor of the American Methodist family and so on.Among the many detached houses of the University of Nanking,the “House of Sun Yatsen” was the earliest completed(the main body was completed in 1911).It was the "vision" existence of early campus construction of the University of Nanking,which has extremely high historical value and humanistic value.“House of Sun Yatsen” was built at the peak of the development of modern architecture in Nanjing at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century.As a representative of the detached houses of the University of Nanking,it not only has the generality of the "Western style" characteristics of this kind of architecture,but also has its particularity because of its more exquisite facade details.The study of the facade detail features of the “House of Sun Yatsen” and the detached houses on the campus of the University of Nanking will help us understand the modern Western architectural culture and technology.The exploration of the “House of Sun Yatsen” ’restoration will help to effectively protect and reuse such modern architectural cultural heritage.This article takes the detached houses of the University of Nanking as the research objects.First of all,through in-depth interpretation of the available materials and on-site research work,the roof,pediments,skintle,walls,doors and windows,lintels,pillars,balconies and steps,these nine aspects of the detached houses’ facade details have been carried on the contrast research,summarizing the regularity of potential facade detail processing technique of detached houses of the University of Nanking.Then,combined with Hummel Family papers and referring to the facade detail features of the detached houses of the University of Nanking,the detailed characteristics of “House of Sun Yatsen” are detailed,presenting the raw materials,original techniques and original practices of such an independent building with exquisite details and exquisite shape and system.Finally,from the safety,comfort and other aspects of current use,the "modern translation" of raw materials,original technology and original practice is carried out to meet the current use needs,and the restoration design of “House of Sun Yatsen”is presented in detail.The work tried to complement the previous deficiencies in the research of “House of Sun Yatsen”and provide later researchers with relevant information on the facade details of the detached houses of the University of Nanking,and form a systematic,inheritable and reproducible measures for the restoration of the University of Nanking for reference when other detached houses of the University of Nanking will be repaired in the future.The whole thesis contains about 32000 words,80 pictures and charts.
