Study Of Strategies Of Emotion Expression In Space Of Disaster Memorials Based On Narrative

Disaster-memorial is a special type of architecture because of its particular needs for narrative and emotion expression. More and more disaster memorials have been built domestically in recent years. Confronted with the development of popular aesthetics and the strike of information technology, disaster memorials designed in the conception addressing the display show its shortage in conveying the event and the emotion. Therefore, the tradition strategies used in memorials in past time cannot meet the design need of contemporary disaster memorials. Based on this background, this thesis proposes a few strategies of emotion expression in disaster memorials in terms of the Narrative. By referring to the interactive mode of Narrative, making available concepts and skills in narratives transfer into methods in architecture design, to help visitors express their emotions in disaster memorials, is what this thesis focuses on. The strategies may strengthen the memorial effects to resist the shock of technology in information age, which also provides a new view of the design of disaster-memorial space.First of all, the thesis introduces the background of its topic and some researches on relevant theories, such as architecture narrative and emotion expression in architectures. Then it is discussed in this thesis that the necessity and availability of introducing the methods of narratives into the emotion expression strategies in the space of disaster memorials, as well as the emotion types and sequence in disaster memorials. This part serves as the theoretical basis of the thesis.The forth to sixth chapters are main parts of this thesis. In these chapters, strategies of emotion expression in space of disaster memorials based on the narrative theory and methods are put forward. Three principles are firstly rise as the fundamental knowledge in design of disaster memorials. Afterwards, referring to the concepts of layers of story and discourse in the Narrative, the emotion expression in space sequence and space fragments are discussed in the following chapters. In the story layer, the thesis summarizes the three types of keynote of space in disaster memorial. Four kinds of space structure are put forward in terms of narrative order which the emotion sequence develops, which are Thread, Roundabout, Radiation, Dispersion. Meanwhile, in the layer of discourse, the architectural languages and design strategies attempting to inspire the emotion in the space of disaster memorials with the view of the narratives similarly.A project, the Memorial of crimes of Unit 731 in Japanese aggression against China, which the author participates in is explained in terms of the narrative to testify the strategies in this thesis as an important part.The main points are concluded in the final chapter, also the thesis prospect the research of emotion expression in the space of disaster memorials in terms of the Narrative.
