Situating Design Foe Reading Space Of Public Libraries In The Information Age

The situation of the public libraries nowadays, has been felicitously reflected by these two sentences of the Northern Song Dynasty poet YanShu.People’s work, study and lives changed profoundly after the informational age came, and so did the ways and the habits of their reading. Providing the public reading, the libraries can’t stop the challenges as one can’t stop the falling of the flowers. It’s no doubt that the traditional libraries could not satisfy people’s changing requirements any more. Even like this, it doesn’t means the reading is degradating and the libraries are disappearing. On the contrary, if the libraries change to keep pace with the time:provide newer and better scene and function, the readers will come back just as the swallows.Furthermore, there is another challenge-No Reading is turning out to be a tendency of the country. It seems that the frequencies of people’s reading are reducing according to the recent reading investigation over the country. As a organization who disseminates culture and informations, the public libraries have the obligation and duty to improve the situation.Researched the designs of the reading spaces in public libraries, this thesis analysed the reason why people are unwilling to be in the library for reading from the angle of interior design. According to which, the most notable problem is that the contradiction between the reader and the reading space. However, the source of this contradiction is that the enviroment and people are not in step with each other.To solve this essential problem, the thesis analysed the expression of emotion in the interior design proceeding from the reader’s emotion need. And brought in the "emotion materialization" from philosophy and aesthetics, to analyse the materialization of the interior design. At the sametime, the scenes affect people’s emotions and affect the reading of them consequently. To touch the highest emotion materialization, the emotion and the scene, which are the subject and object, must been melt into each other. And this, is the very problem that the libraries have to solve.For a better way to melt them, the thesis introduced the design conception-"Scenario based design", Finding the scenic designing ideas and methods from the vertical depth assisted by the cognitive psychology--Donald Arthur Norman’s theory about design’s three layer. Instinctive layer, behavioral layer, and the reflective layer are respectively emphasizing the most intuitive feelings, the dynamic feelings and the Interaction between man and space. So that it could been adopted into the design of the library’s reading spaces sloving the contradiction between the reading spaces and the readers.
