Chromatic cityscape is important to express urban characteristics, playing a significant part in urban spirit. As a historical and cultural city, the old city is the milestone for Beijing. However, during the long process of urbanization construction, Beijing has been facing a crisis that the traditional features tend to be encroached. By investigating the strategies for the old city’s color control in Beijing, this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive conservation of the Old City’s historical and cultural heritage in Beijing, and to enrich theory and method of chromatic cityscape planning in China. To build an overall picture of chromatic cityscape planning and to develop research methods based on quantitative color collection and scientific analysis, this paper examines theories and researches of relevant fields in color science, architecture in combination with urban planning, and analyzes domestic and foreign cases of chromatic cityscape planning.Through quantitative analysis, as well as field surveys to gain basic color data of old buildings, this paper studies urban color evolution at different stages of Beijing Old City, forming a systematic understanding of the old city’s color.
